Snow Canyon State Park - Bill's Visit

Our good friend, Bill, came to visit us at Snow Canyon in May.  We've been telling him that there is a guy, Bob, who works at the park that could be his brother!  They are so similar it's unbelievable.  Finally they got to meet each other when Bill arrived and we invited Bob over for dinner.

We've know Bill for years after I met him through hiking so it was only natural that we took him for our favorite hike at the park, Padre Canyon!

At the canyon saddle looking north.

Al being a brat!

After hiking up the canyon and over the saddle it was time to make our way down the other side.

The next day we watched a couple of episodes of the Formula 1 series while we waited for the rain to pass and then hiked on the Petrified Dunes.  It was very windy up there on top but the view was still spectacular!

Then we took Bill to the Scenic Overlook just off Rt. 18 for a different view of the park.  The campground and visitor center are behind the tan rock on the left.

On his last day with us we went to Zion National Park.  We knew the weather prediction wasn't great so we were prepared with rain gear.  It ended up being an awesome day with so many waterfalls on the high rock walls!

We rode the shuttle to the end of the line at Temple of Sinawava and then got off at almost every stop on the way back.

This is the location of my all time favorite hike, The Narrows, but we wouldn't be doing it today.  In fact it was closed.  The water flow was just too high and fast with all the rain the area has received lately and the water temperature was only 38!  Way too cold!  It was amazing to see how different the area at the start of the hike looks compared to when we did it last summer.

When we did the hike last summer the start of the hike looked like this.

Today it looked like this!

We had light rain off an on all day.  During a break in the rain we found a down tree and ate the lunch we brought with us.

Big Bend shuttle stop

Angels Landing - not a great day to do that hike but there were people visible up there.
Weeping Rock was more like a full on cry today!

So the weather wasn't great this time but we had a totally different experience at the park with all the rain and incredible waterfalls.

The next day Bill left and drove back to California.  We enjoyed his visit.  We expect to be seeing him again in July when we start our summer waterskiing trips.

We're just about wrapping up our time at Snow Canyon State Park.  My next entry will be about the people we worked with and others we met.

  1. It's been a long time since we hiked with our friend Bill. It was very good to see him and to share some of our favorite trails here in the park with him.
Zion was good to see with all the waterfalls that we would normally not see any other time of the year. All the mad sound of rushing water was truly a great experience, well worth a little rain drops on us as we hiked.
Ok now I think I’m ready for water-ski season to begin I’m getting very itch to be out on the water. :>) And honestly I have to thank my buddy Joe Johnson who got me started in water-skiing such a long time ago.

  2. Wow Zion looks amazing with all that water! And we’ll definitely have to go back and revisit Snow Canyon to do some hiking as we didn’t have time when we were there in late April and met you both. Crazy what a small world that you knew Bill too, who is my husband’s cousin! Hope we can all get together someday! Safe travels!
